This section will consist on drafting, taking pictures, planning and commenting on how my final product will aesthetically look like and what feature it will contain. This will cover all the Magazine Aesthetics, Generic Mise-en-scene, Drawn Drafts, Digital Drafts, Double page article and the pictures I will take in a photography session on set and offset. All this tasks will help me to construct a perfect final piece. For example, This tasks will help me to determinate the models I will use, the costumes and props they'll be wearing, the pose, the camera angle and type of shot. Also, I will be able to implement a effective colour scheme, structure and layout to construct my real piece, that I'll create using photoshop and applying the new knowledge that I'll learn during this stage.
MAGAZINE AESTHETICS
This is the first lesson of the panning section of my website. This task is called magazine aesthetics and it consisted on piking some front pages, contents pages and double page spreads and explain the reason why I like them.
POSES & COSTUMES
This is the poses and costumes task and in this task I have been listing down all the common Mis-en-scene in the R&B culture. R&B culture in general is about flashiness. It's not enough to "make it," you have to show and tell everyone around you that you've made it. It's not about *being* rich, it's about *appearing* rich. Subtlety is not a part of the culture, but attention-seeking is. In the R&B culture they like to show off with their woman almost half naked (males), or them selves half naked (females), drive custom plate numbered cars with music playing out extremely loud, dye their hair with bright colours. They just love to show off. All this portrays R&B artists as attention seekers and money orientated people also that they are big role modes for people in today's society.
One very common prop in the R&B cultures is wearing gold chains. Gold chains are considered as symbols of fortune and a fashion, style in this culture as they love to show up. Some other people think that it's a status thing as gold is represented as a symbol of wealth they love to show off with whatever flashy thing they can lay their hands on this portrays people of this music gender as money and fashion orientated as they do wear this props to show that they are attention seekers which is a dominant stereotype of artists in this music genre.
Wearing teeth grills is just want another way to show off their wealth. It is just a new accessory, like tongue rings... It's also a way to call attention. Others believe that it's about the media and fashion, division of social groups and where you belong as people with money will buy it and wear it as it's flashy so people will think that your wealthy. Overall wearing grillz is a way to show how much money the have and to show their swag (style) this portrays R&B singers as attention seekers, money and fashion orientated all this is a dominant stereotype of artists props in this music genre.

AI think that tattoos, just like any other thing related to a person is an extension to his personality. Some R&B singers wear to stress on their main identity and to remind themselves of who they are. This identity can be "I am dangerous","I am special" etc. Other R&B artists wear tattoos to send messages about their identity to other people like "I am not the kind of person you would want to mess with" is one possible message a person who has a tattoo could be trying to send to the world just like Chris Brown's neck tattoo.
Tattoos portrays R&B and Hip Hop artists as violent, gang affiliated and aggressive and the fact that many R&B artists are black makes this representations of R&B artists very common as they are always represented as criminals and bad role models for the society this is dominant stereotype of artists in this music genre.
COSTUME (FEMALE)
It's very common to see R&B female artists wearing tight costumes as they choose clothes for all sorts of reasons, including comfort, protection, status, social or sexual display, creativity, disguise, specially their personal and professional identity, and affiliation with some group or cause. Usually elegant short and provocative costumes that's why people and the media portrays them as attention seekers and over confident (they are the ones that encourage people to vote for feminism in this patriarchal world).
REBELLIOUS COSTUMES
R&B female wear very rebellious clothes, in my opinion the main reason is to apparent attractive to the opposite sex as it's the now a contemporary trend in sexual appeal and the fact that it's socially acceptable to the same sex based on contemporary trends in fashion. Also female artists when they show it all off they receive a lot more attention then those of us who do not. and the fact that most men would be more likely to approach a women whose wearing tight clothes then a women who is not and in the r&b culture it all about attention and to be seen as wealthy and sexy so it's very normal to see they with very tight shorts, dresses and showing their chest and body curves. |
TIGHT JEANS
R&B females wear tight jeans because form-fitting clothes tight jeans are considered as flattering and sexy and they wear them to accentuate their figure. They show that no one looks good in baggy, ill-fitting clothes, much less in jeans that sag around their backside. Another reason is that tight jeans connotes confidence and security as it shows their figures and curves. I also think that its for sex appeal they definitely sacrifice comfort for feeling, looking sexier. I also suggest that it is because they want to feel attractive, which is a very positive sensation that boost your self-confidence and happiness. |

COSTUME (MALE)
R&B fashion complements the expressions and attitudes of R&B and hip hop culture in general. When it comes to R&B fashion, everything is about style, carrying off that style and being recognized for it. It isn't just wearing it, it is a message you tell the world. the fashion of R&B speaks of the person’s identify and culture. A BBoy (bad boy) or Bgirl (bad girl) may be rocking Addidas, Nike, Jordan's while donning an oversized tee and that is truly what they want to wear because it represents who they are and the culture. The clothes, the shoes, the bandanna's, the blings, the chains, grillz, sunglasses or the caps, they all aren't a result of mainstream channel forcing advertisements on them, but instead they are real elements of the culture that allow them to stand out hence express who they are, this connotes that R&B artists are very proud of their culture and they love to show that through their costume connotes that they're very cultural and caring it also portrays them as intimidating and mysterious as they are seen as gang affiliated and violent people because of the costume they wear (normally black/dark colours...) and their cultural props (gold, silver chains, rings..) are what gang members wear and the fact that most R&B artists are black makes this representations dominant.
NEW ON THE R&B FASHION...
BUCKET HATSThis is new in the R&B culture as originally fisherman were the ones wearing it. R&B celebrities started wearing it in the early 2015 when one celebrity wore it and then the rest followed him making this a new props this connotes that the R&B fashion and style changes very quickly.
|
BOMBER JACKETSBomber jackets is are new accessories of clothing in the R&B culture as they were worn by military and soldiers before the R&B culture used it in their style. This connotes that they are fashion orientated and very stylish people.
|
I think that many R&B use hand gestures to help them to co-ordinate the flow. A different set of hand gestures are applied to different flows the use of hand gestures connotes that they don't joke with their music as they take the notes and flows very serious and they want the people to feel and understand what they're trying to show. There are many different hand gestures in R&B and rap (as this two genres are related) and they all have a meaning for example:
The Jay Z hand gesture
The most common explanation, and the one that Jay-Z himself uses, is that the hand sign promotes Roc-A-Fella records. For Jay-Z it means a diamond which is a play off of the word Rock in Roc-A-Fella records. A diamond is the hardest stone on earth as well as most precious. Others believe that the symbol has Illuminati ties. When Jay-Z poses with his eye behind the triangle, it leads some to think the symbol is of an "all seeing eye". Rihanna Beyonce |
DRAWN DRAFTS
This is the drown drafts task. This task consisted on drowning the structure of my magazine and create the layout. I had to drew some potential front covers, contents pages, and double page spreads that I would use on my magazine.
FRONT PAGE
CONTENTS PAGE
DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
DIGITAL DRAFT
This is the digital draft task. In this task I had to again make a draft of my magazine's front cover, contents page and double page spread. To do this task I used Photoshop to make the structure and layout of my magazine.
FRONT PAGE
This is the front page and I created this two potential front covers for my magazine. The first one doesn't have a lots of cover lines and the masthead is at the back top of the main images head, it is a mid shot so it can show the upper part of the costume and props. On the other hand, the second one is a mid/extreme close up shot so people can focus on the main image, the masthead is at the top corner and this example has more cover lines than the previous. Both of them each easy and clear structures so it is more visually attractive.
CONTENTS PAGE
I created this two different layouts and structures for a contents page, one is text based so its more informative, however the other one is more visually attractive, so the target audience can focus more on the main image more than the text.
DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
I want the double page spread to be an interview (Q&A) so I decided that I would like it to have this structure and layout as it looks clear and interesting.
EXTRA
DOUBLE-PAGE ARTICLE
This was the double page article task. In this one I have created the interview (Q&A) that I will use on my dps, I decide that I should be about a new R&B artist that explains the roller-coaster that he went through to become a celebrity. I wanted to make the dps interview personal and informative as I believe that my magazine is for people who wishes to become big R&B artist like Rihanna and Chris Brown, also for those fans out there. I made two articles as I wasn't sure if the model for the dps will be a male or female.
CONTENTS ANALYSIS
This is the contents analysis task. In this task I created the features that I will use in my contents page. I want the magazine to be informative and personal, so I but some gossip and trends that my readers would die to know. I also added a editor comment and explain them a bit about the magazine, the issues of this week and the events that the magazine is involved .
CAMERA VIDEO
This is the camera video task. I did this task with some colleagues in school, In this task me and my group created a video showing all the camera angles and movements that we studied. This task helped me to imagine the camera angle that I would use when I take the pictures for the front cover of my magazine.
ON-SITE PHOTOSHOOT
This is task consisted on taking pictures of some friends who would provably be the models of the main image of my magazine. We took this pictures inside the school building that's why the task is called on-site photoshoot, with the help of a media studies teacher I took this pictures. I really like this pictures as I tried to take photos in different angles that we studied. The models were constantly changing their poses and props.
FRONT COVER
I really like this picture as its a mid/long shot and it looks very professional for a front cover as it's the type of photo you would see in a R&B, hip-hop magazine. This is due for the props (phone, money, sunglasses), the poses and costume, and the fact that there is two females looking very attractive with a male that looks intimidating and possessive in the middle. This gives this idea of patriarchal music genre.
|
I don't like the fact that it's a mid shot as it doesn't show all their costume and it's more focused on their NVC.
|
CONTENTS PAGE
I like this picture for the contents because of the pose and the fact that it a long shot so I can put the image on the middle of the page with the text boxes around it. This type of shot showing all the costume and props. the costume is all black and the hair style giving him this mysterious and dangerous look which is commune in R&B.
|
I don't like the pose of this picture as it's not common in the R&B world. I don't like the fact that he doesn't have any props as it makes the image looks simple and common which is a very subverted stereotype for artists of this music genre.
|
DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
This photo looks very professional and I really like it. I love their costume and props as they look appropriate for a R&B music magazine. I like their poses and the fact that its a long shot the shows all their costume up to their knees.
|
The thing that I dislike of this photos is the camera angle as it's focused on their mis-en-scene but not showing all the costume. I don't like the poses and NVC expressions.
|
OFF-SITE PHOTOSHOOT
This task consisted on taking photos of some friends in different locations over the Christmas holidays. I really like this photos as I tried to be creative and active so made my friends pose for the camera in different locations`.
FRONT COVER
CONTENTS PAGE
I like this picture as it has a simple background so I could easily edit and cut out as I just want the image for the contents and put the text boxes around it. I also like the fact that the model in the picture is dressed in a tight black dress which connotes that she's a attention seeker which is a dominant stereotype for R&B females.
|
I don't like the pose of this model as she's doing a rock and roll hand gestures which is deffinately not for R&B.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
COMPOSITION LAYOUTS
This task consisted on using my photos of both photo-shoots and use the magazine structure templet that we had to take from the ctklms website and then edit everything suing Photoshop.

MAGAZINE STAGES
In this task I will be showing the process of creating my magazine. I will show all the stages since the drowning draft to the final product. This will show all the changes and editing that I will have to do.
FRONT COVER
This was my first front cover, I changed it as the structure and layout looks horrible, the image is a long shot, fact that I don't like, and the background looks very busy which is was one of my biggest concern as my colour scheme would change so I decided to change the whole thing.
This was my second try, I didn't like this front cover as the background and the image looks very dark and also the colour scheme the whole magazine and the cover lines looks very bright and It's deffinately not what I wanted. In conclusion I didn't like the general structure and layout.
This is my final and perfect front cover. In general I love the main image and the pose, Also I like the structure of the cover lines and the layout in general. I also like the colour scheme as it is what I wanted in my R&B magazine.
CONTENTS PAGE
This is the process that I went through to create my contents page. I changed the structure of some things as it shown in the final product.
DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
This is the process I went through to crate my double page spread.
PLANNING STAGE VIDEO
In this video I explained the process of crating and doing all the planning stage tasks. I also explain how well it went and what I used to make each of the task in the planning stage.
